Join Red Clay Sangha and Carolyn Browning Helsel of Emory University’s Candler School of Theology for Buddhist Homiletics 101.  Over the course of four, two-hour interactive sessions, participants will hone their skills in preparing and delivering mindful, focused and inspirational dharma talks.  During the course, each participant will be videotaped delivering a brief speech and will participate in a supportive feedback session.

Class 1:  Embodied Speaking: An Introduction to Homiletics

  1. What are you doing? The purpose(s) of sermons as guide to methods
  2. The body and breath: channel for sacred communication
  3. The mind: sources of a mindful dharma talk
  4. The words: crafting an oral/aural message 

Class 2:  Speaking Blocks (I): Overcome Writer’s Block

  1. Writing off the page
  2. Focus and function
  3. Sermon forms as helpful guides
  4. Looking for illustrations

Class 3:  Speaking Blocks (II): Bring it to the Chopping Block

  1. Know your audience; removing hindrances to hearing
  2. The discipline of one focus; removing extraneous points
  3. The discipline of one function; removing extraneous paths
  4. Building blocks: pulling the pieces together, rebuilding

Class 4:  Inspirational Speaking

  1. Authenticity as source of inspiration
  2. Finding your own voice
  3. Freedom for others; responding to cues
  4. Role of testimony

    About Carolyn


    Carolyn Browning Helsel is a PhD student at Emory University, studying how white preachers preach about racism in white congregations. An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), she has previously served as the associate director of admissions at Princeton Theological Seminary, as an associate pastor in San Antonio, Texas, and as a chaplain in a multi-faith and racially diverse hospital in Yuma, Arizona. This summer, she is teaching preaching workshops to Methodists preparing for ministry at Candler School of Theology’s Course of Study program.
