What is "Waking Up?": Sitting and Discussion

One-Day Retreat with Gareth Young
Saturday, August 18, 2018, from 8:45 to 5:00

Each individual comes to meditation practice for their own personal reasons, but as we stay engaged in the practice, that original reason can fade away. For many of us as that happens, our interest shifts towards the experience from which Buddha drew his name - waking up! But this is not something that is often discussed in many Buddhist communities, and it can become an illusive and confusing idea. What is this "enlightenment", "waking up" or "nirvana" all about? How does it relate to "moksha?" or "kensho?" The theme of this one-day retreat is waking up itself, and the talks and discussions will be focused on exploring it.

Cost  As with all of our in-town retreats, there is no charge, donations are accepted.Gareth Young is very active in interfaith and social justice work. A couple of years after being ordained a Zen Buddhist priest, Gareth left formal Zen practice to co-found Red Clay Sangha, our Buddhist community. He is engaged with several other interfaith and social justice organizations, serving on boards and participating in grass-roots activism.
