The Five Mindfulness Trainings
of Thich Nhat Hanh
A One-Day, In-Town Retreat with Richard Skoonberg
Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 9:00 to 5:00

To become a sincere, Buddhist practitioner, one commits to practicing the precepts. The five basics precepts are: do not kill, do not steal, do not lie, do not abuse sex, and refrain from intoxicants. During this retreat, we will combine meditation with an examination of the precepts (trainings) offered by the late Vietnamese Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh. The Five Mindfulness Trainings are his foundational teachings on sila, the Buddhist term for ethical behavior. His teaching provides a deeper perspective on the meaning of the five basic precepts. Practicing the Five Mindfulness Trainings is how we can take our practice off the cushion and into our everyday lives.
"The Five Mindfulness Trainings are one of the most concrete ways to practice mindfulness. They are nonsectarian, and their nature is universal. They are true practices of compassion and understanding."
--Thich Nhat Hanh
