Born Free: Day-long Retreat with Gareth Young

Where: Zoom only (Use this link to join, or go to https://zoom.us/, click the links to enter a meeting, and enter meeting ID 971-373-141 and password 879550).

What:

"Jean-Jacques Rousseau famously said "Man is born free but everywhere in chains," written in the context of conversations about equity and justice.

But from a Buddhist standpoint, the statement applies to all of us - only the chains are of our own creation. The promise of our practice is that we can find true freedom through the Buddha's wise teachings, the kind of freedom that is beyond economic or political freedom. In this day-long session, we will explore the relationship of this freedom to the cultivation of wisdom ("when I know that I am nothing") and compassion ("when I know that I am everything"), and and hopefully take a couple of steps along the path in the process

When: Saturday, October 16th, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch and periods of meditative practice throughout.

Materials: A document of texts and sources for the session will be distributed prior to the retreat date.
