The Fire Sermon

A Dharma Study Session with Gareth Young

Saturday, May 25, 2024, 9:00 to noon

In Person (Hospital Drive) and on Zoom

The Fire Sermon is third discourse given by the Buddha after his enlightenment (according to the Theravadan tradition), and it is one of his more powerful, likening our sensual engagement with the world to a fire that is raging, fed by our own intentions: "Everything is burning...the eye is burning...thoughts are burning". In this half-day study session Gareth Young will explore this important and profound early teaching and show how its teachings can be used as a pillar of our practice. The exploration will include lessons from the Buddha's first two sermons and other relevant suttas to fill out the context, history and teaching.

Here is a link to a document containing the text of the Fire Sermon as well as other suttas to which Gareth refers in this study session.
