    Women's Circle

Online on Zoom, every 4th Sunday from 2PM to 3:30PM

This is a monthly drop-in group offering a supportive place to ask questions and to share our experience of the dharma. After a brief period of seated meditation, we begin with a reading or special topic, followed by group discussion.  We are currently meeting via Zoom (using the Sunday morning connection: Click here to join. Alternatively go to https://zoom.us/, click the links to enter a meeting, and enter meeting ID 971-373-141 and password 879550).

All who identify as women are welcome, from any spiritual background. No previous experience with meditation is necessary.

In addition to poetry written by Buddhist women, we are currently using Koans from two different books written by women:

    • The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women, Edited by Florence Caplow and Susan Moon.
    • The Book of Householder Koans: Waking Up in the Land of Attachments, written by Eve Myonen Marko and Wendy Egyoku Nakao.

Meetings are from 2:00 to 3:30, held on the fourth Sunday of the month. Occasionally as a result of holidays and other events, it is necessary to change the date. If you want to check on schedule, current texts or activities, or anything else about the group, please contact Sally Landrum or Charli Vogt.  We have an email list that we would be glad to add you to.  We generally send out a reminder email the week before the meeting.

    Monthly (Full Moon)Potluck Lunch

Every month, typically on the Sunday closest to the full moon, Red Clay Sangha members "Renew the Precepts".

This beautiful practice is undertaken communally after the regular service. Our preferred precepts ceremony includes three different bells, which members of the community volunteer to ring and accompany communal recitation/ chanting of the precepts. After a short talk and discussion, we break for the highlight of the day: potluck lunch!

Folk who remember bring in their favorite vegetarian dishes and we have more than enough food for all (especially for those who forget to bring food or didn't realize it was potluck!), so please come for the morning, or just for precepts renewal, but in any case always for lunch! It's a wonderful time to get to know your fellow sangha members a little better.

This event is recurring, and registration is not available...and certainly not required! If you're receiving an announcement by email, it most likely means that next Sunday is precepts renewal, so check dates on the home page "Regular Programs".

    Tai Chi

The RCS Tai Chi group meets every Tuesday at 7:30pm at the Sangha's physical location for one hour. Due to safety and other considerations, this is an in-person only activity. Also, due to space constraints, currently only a limited number of people can practice at a time, and registration is required. Please contact Markus Wilms (the program leader) at makkam3@gmail.com if you are interested and would like to try it out. Previous experience is not necessary.

Tai Chi is an ancient form of martial arts originating out of China and routed in the Taoist principle of yin and yang. Characteristic for the tai chi form are slow and well-practiced movements and postures. These can be performed by all age groups and makes tai chi a popular low-impact exercise.

The practice of tai chi has proven health benefits as it increases flexibility and stamina. It is also connected with the attainment of Chi - the Chinese concept for life energy. Synchronizing the movements with the breath is an important aspect of the tai chi flow.

The most practiced tai chi is the 24-posture form. At Red Clay Sangha, the form is taught by Markus Wilms. He has over 20 years of experience and has practiced the last 5 years extensively with a Chinese teacher. His motto is: “Every teacher is a student; every student is a teacher”.

    Wednesday Reading Group

    (Zoom Only)

The Reading Group has been meeting for well over a decade and continues to bring forward and discuss books expressing an extremely wide range of Buddhist views and interests (intentionally texts representing diverse traditions, races, gender orientations, etc). The conversation is about making the dharma real in our lives. We meet on our regular Zoom link (click here) at 7:30 on Wednesday evenings and sit together for 30 minutes, after which our book discussion runs for an hour from 8:00 to 9:00.

Many join the group at 8:00 after the sitting period, and it is common for attendees to not have read (and even not to own!) the book we're reading, so please don't let this be a barrier to your own attendance. The book serves as a point of departure...and if the conversation interests you in the text, you can buy it and start to catch up before the next week's conversation.

The discussion is facilitated by one of the regular senior attendees, often Gareth, to help keep the conversation smooth and ensure that all are included and heard as they wish.

    Currently Reading

The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa (John Yates) and Matthew Immergut

The Mind Illuminated is a how-to meditation guide from a neuroscientist who is also an acclaimed meditation master. This book offers a 10-stage program that is both deeply grounded in ancient spiritual teachings about mindfulness and holistic health, and also draws from the latest brain science to provide a roadmap for anyone interested in achieving the benefits of mindfulness. Dr. John Yates offers a model of how the mind works, including steps to overcome mind wandering and dullness, extending your attention span while meditating, and subduing subtle distractions.

This manual provides illustrations and charts to help you work through each stage of the process, offering tools that work across all types of meditation practices. The Mind Illuminated is an essential read, whether you are a beginner wanting to establish your practice or a seasoned veteran ready to master the deepest state of peace and mindfulness.

Sunday Morning Meditation, Talk and Service

On Sunday mornings Red Clay Sangha meets for sitting and walking meditation, a brief chanting service and a Dharma talk and discussion. Our meeting format is hybrid - in person at our Chamblee location and on Zoom.  To participate by Zoom,

click here to join. Alternatively go to https://zoom.us/, click the links to enter a meeting, and enter meeting ID 971-373-141 and password 879550.

We begin at 9:00 with silent, seated meditation for an hour and a half, comprising three 25 minute periods, separated by two sets of 5 minutes of walking meditation.

    Sunday Schedule

9:00 am   Sitting / Walking Meditation
    10:30       Morning Service
    10:45       Dharma Discussion
    11:30       Close and Brunch

The morning service begins immediately following the meditation period and lasts for approximately ten minutes, after which there is a short bio break and opportunity to meet and greet. The group then sits in a circle for a dharma talk discussion, led by one of our senior teachers. After the morning events, at around 11:30, we adjourn for lunch at a nearby establishment.

All are welcome: please come out and join us some Sunday morning. If you are new or need meditation instruction, please come 5 or 10 minutes early and introduce yourself, and we can give you a brief introduction.

It is not necessary to be present for the entire schedule, but please be mindful of the disruption to others when entering and leaving.

    Precepts Renewal Ceremony

At or near each full moon we have a ceremony to renew our commitment to living our lives in accordance with the Buddhist precepts (open to all Buddhist and Non-Buddhist, and regardless of whether you've previously received the precepts). This ceremony is deeply meaningful and an important practice for many of our members. It takes place immediately after the morning service and is followed by a dharma talk and discussion about the precepts.

The community lunch on Precepts Sundays is not at a local restaurant, but rather pot luck in our space. If you would like to bring a dish along, that would be great; but your presence is your most important gift, so please stay and join us whether you bring food or not. We always end up with way too much food, so the more the merrier!

    Thursday Evening Practice

This is a hybrid event: in person at our Hospital Drive location, and also on Zoom at our regular Zoom link (click here). We begin at 7:30 and sit together for 40 minutes. After this Gareth will offer a talk about a segment of source material (e.g. a sutta/ sutra, or extract, or a practice text), then open up for questions, reflections and discussion.

This is open to all and no prior knowledge of the source texts - or even of Buddhism! - is required.

    Schedule

We are currently (and for the foreseeable future) alternating four streams in these talks - essentially a monthly rotation. This will provide continuity and also variety! There is no need to prepare or read in advance. For the enthusiastic participant, textual references (esp to the Mumonkan and Attakavagga) will allow you to find the source material, should you wish). The four themes are:
    • Core Buddhist Topics: Gareth will pick a core Buddhist teaching or concept (eg kamma, emptiness, non-self, the three marks, nibbana/ nirvana) for each of the monthly sessions as the topic for his talk and the subsequent group conversation.
    • Poems from the Dhammapada, a foundational early Buddhist text, learned by heart by trainee monastics in many Theravadin traditions. Over the centuries it has been used by Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Dogen, and many others, and it continues to offer us profound wisdom and compassion.
    • Poems from the Attakavagga ("Book of Eights"). This is another early collection of Buddhist teachings. Drawn from the Sutta Nipata, it's name comes from the eight verses in many of the poems. A recurring theme of the poems is not holding to views.
    • Koans from the Mumonkan, which is one of the classic Zen koan collections. Gareth will be using Shibayama's "Zen Comments on the Mumonkan" as the primary text and translation source
Each talk will be self-contained and stand independently, so feel free to drop in occasionally and to not do so when you feel like it. Each of the series of talks will run for several months.

RCS Insight Dialogue Practice Group, led by Katie Rhodes

    Second Saturday of the Month

    9:00-10:30 a.m. on Zoom

Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice that uses natural human connectedness and the wisdom teachings of the Buddha to practice mindfulness meditation with others. It is particularly useful for investigating habitual responses in our actions of thought, word and deed.

This is a monthly opportunity to practice with friends from Red Clay Sangha. It is offered as a way for us to connect with each other using the ID meditation guidelines: Pause, Relax, Open, Attune to Emergence, Speak the Truth and Listen Deeply. We will be learning and sharing as we practice together.

The morning will include individual meditation practice, contemplation practice with a partner, and practice as a group.

You can learn more about Insight Dialogue from the ID Community website https://insightdialogue.org/

Katie Rhodes is a member of Red Clay Sangha. She has been a Buddhist practitioner for over 30 years, primarily in the Insight/Vipassana tradition. She has been practicing Insight Dialogue meditation since 2023 and is a member of the Northeast Insight Dialogue Teachers Cohort.

She uses mindfulness-based cognitive approaches in her work as a psychotherapist. She has a doctorate in clinical social work.

    Questions? Please email Katie Rhodes

    What to expect

All are welcome, no previous experience with meditation or Insight Dialogue experience is required.

The morning will include individual silent sitting as well as ID relational practice in group practice and in dyads and triads in breakout rooms: speaking and listening to self and others.

    The Bhagavad Gita for Buddhists

    (Dharma Study Session)

    with Deborah Monroy

June 7th, 2025, 9:00 to noon, Zoom only

The Gita is a sacred text that passionately invites us to live a dispassionate life.

The story is immersive, experiential—let’s share our experiences on 7 June.

This very short book contains beliefs central to various Hindu religions along with many beliefs—and dilemmas--that we as Buddhists encounter.

    We’ll look at:

What it is (backstory around the book); who we are (the Gita’s belief system seems often--Buddhist); and then--what should we do?

How does the dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna reflect their friendship? What insights do we find that resonate with us in our daily lives?

This dharma talk will include brief periods of meditation along with time for questions, remarks—and contradictions.

    Retreat with Dhammadipa

The Antidote for the Poison: Everyday Ways to Cool the Fires of Greed, Anger, and Delusion

June 20, 7-9 PM (Friday evening)

    June 21,  9AM-5PM retreat (Saturday)

June 22 (Dharma talk as part of the service)

    Description

The Antidote for the Poison: Everyday Ways to Cool the Fires of Greed, Anger, and Delusion

Buddhist teachings are very pratical, framing the difficulties we typically experience and taking a problem-solving approach to them. Three problems that we encounter again and again are at the root of suffering: greed, anger, and delusion. Though these qualities of mind may seem to dominate the world we live in, practice can dramatically shift our personal relationship to them.

If you want to build up momentum in your practice, it's important to maintain consistency, particularly when it comes to meditation. Yet just staying with it day after day can be the hardest part. The early teachings of the Pali suttas offer guidance in the form of four practices that can be taken up by anyone who wants to get the ball rolling. This day of retreat together with Dharma friends, new and familiar, will consist of guided and silent sitting meditation, a Dharma talk by visiting teacher Dhammadipa, walking meditation, and optional sharing in a small group.

Dhammadīpā is the mother of a lovely adult daughter, and enjoys sewing and watercolor painting.

    Chanting: Study and Practice

A Dharma Study Session with Gareth Young

    Saturday, July 05, 2025, 9:30 to noon

In Person (Hospital Drive) and on Zoom

Chanting is an important Buddhist practice that is used extensively in most Buddhist lineages. It serves not just to aid memory and recall of the suttas/ sutras, but also to strengthen the feeling of sangha and as a powerful practice that quietens the thinking mind and can help provide access to the unconditioned mind. In some traditions - some Pure Land and Lotus Sutra sects, for example - chanting is the dominant practice. D.T. Suzuki, the remarkable Zen Buddhist teacher and author, spoke in depth about the power of chanting and of the Pure Land practice in particular.

In this study session we will explore chanting across a wide variety of Buddhist traditions, and will have several periods of chanting as a group. A document with the chants we'll use will be provided ahead of time.

Gareth Young is a co-founder and the guiding teacher of Red Clay Sangha. He has maintained a committed meditation practice for over 20 years in the Zen and Vipassana traditions, and integrates over 10 years of interfaith engagement into his teaching.

Gareth's teaching authorization is in the Thai Forest lineage of Ajahn Chah, Jack Kornfield and Lisa Ernst.

Cost There is no cost to attend this retreat. Donations to Red Clay Sangha are gratefully received.

    Mindful Moments

    Topic: TBD

    Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:30pm

In Person at the Sangha (Hospital Drive)

We’re eager to announce the next Mindful Moments Monthly event for August. This time, we will be watching the internationally awarded Japanese animation film The Tale of The Princess Kaguya from Studio Ghibli. As always, this event is open to the general public, and we highly encourage you to invite others to watch this treasured anime classic. The viewing will be held at Red Clay from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. Snacks and tea will be provided for the benefit of all beings.

    About the Film

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is a heart-warming story about a mysterious young woman inexplicably discovered amongst a bamboo forest and adopted by a poor, childless couple as their own daughter.

As this miraculous girl grows into a thoughtful young woman, she begins to draw the unwanted attention of several rich and powerful suitors beguiled by her heavenly beauty. The crux of this story arises when Princess Kaguya’s hope for a simple, authentic life conflicts with the societal pressure to pursue wealth, influence, and opulence. Over the course

of the movie, the princess must stave off the superficial desires of the men seeking to court her, leave her humble village of origin for the trappings of royalty, cope with the unequal expectations thrust upon women, and rediscover her mythical past. The themes underlying this complex and wonderfully illustrated film are centered around finding satisfaction in simplicity, focusing on meaningful relationships, and forging your own story in the face of social conformity.

     One-Day Retreat with Gareth Young

    Saturday, July 19th, 2025, from  9:00 to 5:00

    One Minute Buddha

Silent Illumination is the nature of the universe - Buddha Nature both quiescent and vibrantly alive, still and yet active - and also how we can practice. Dating back to Hongzhi in 12th Century China, and before that to Huineng and Bodhidharma, this approach to Buddhism was foundational for Chinese Chan Buddhism and to the Zen traditions that followed in Japan. Dogen spoke simply and eloquently about Silent Illumination when he wrote, "Zazen is itself enlightenment, one minute of sitting, one minute of being Buddha".

During this retreat Gareth will talk about the tradition and the teachings of Silent Illumination, and will provide guidance on the practice. For those interested in reading ahead of time, you might find Guo Gu's book, "Silent Illumination", which includes translations and commentaries on some of Hongzhi's writings or any of his YouTube talks on the subject of interest. You might also read Huineng's Platform Sutra, which exists in many translations.

What to expect: This will be a full day of sitting and walking meditation practice, with brief instructions to start the day, a dharma talk mid-morning, and Q&A/discussion mid-afternoon. All are welcome, no previous experience with meditation required.

Location: Red Clay Sangha, 3315 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, and on Zoom

Food: There will be a break around noon for lunch. Please bring your meal. There is a refrigerator on premise if you wish to store food in it, as well as a kettle and a variety of tea bags if you'd like to make yourself tea.

Schedule: The door will be open by 8:45 for arrival and settling in. At 9:00 Gareth will give a brief introduction and orientation and we will begin sitting around 9:10. We will likely finish a few minutes before 5:00. There will be a dharma talk mid-morning, a Q&A/ Discussion period mid-afternoon, and the balance of the day (other than the break for lunch) will be alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation.

    Service Project at Nicholas House

    26 July 2025 from 11AM to 1PM

    Description

The members of Red Clay Sangha and Peach Blossom Sangha join in to help prepare and serve lunch to the families at the Nicholas House shelter. This is a beautiful opportunity to practice compassion and generosity to our local community alongside sangha friends.

Nicholas House was founded in 1982 by members of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, who opened their Sunday school rooms to families with nowhere else to sleep—addressing a crisis few were even acknowledging at the time. Recognizing that one night of shelter wasn’t enough, Nicholas House evolved into a nonprofit that now serves nearly 400 parents and children each year with wrap-around services tailored to families facing homelessness.

Its four core programs—an emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, rapid rehousing, and housing stability support—address both immediate needs and long-term solutions, all guided by the goals of helping families earn a living wage, maintain their health, and secure stable housing. Families served by Nicholas House have lost more than just their homes—they’ve lost safety, health, and hope. Children suffer academically and emotionally, while parents face stigma, mental health struggles, and barriers to employment.

Nicholas House believes stable housing is foundational—not just a place to live, but the launchpad for healing, growth, and breaking the cycle of poverty. Learn more at https://nicholashouse.org/

Game on! Weekly Board Game Day! – Lle Hapus Wrexham

Grab your favorite set of dice and invite a friend! This month, we welcome all to swing by the Sangha for an easy-going afternoon of skillful enter action over some of our favorite party games. Many people understand that Buddhist teachings ask practitioners to look inwards for peace and the end of suffering, but the Buddha also emphasized the importance of being engaged with a compassionate and supportive community. It is our hope that an unstructured game night will provide guests with the opportunity to mindfully participate in a shared practice and have fun doing so all at the same time.

This event will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Red Clay Sangha. Below you will find a list of games for a variety of ages and interests that will be available to play. We encourage participants to invite friends and family to share in the fun. As always, tea and snacks will be provided for the benefit of all beings.

Wise & Otherwise: a game where you complete famous words of wisdom from around the world often with hilarious results.

New Yorker Cartoon Caption Game: a game where you provide captions to cartoons from the titular publication.

Telestrations: a game of drawing and guessing.

Bang: an old-west style bluffing game

Apples to Apples: a family-friendly party game where players take turns mixing and matching pairs of words with silly results.

Cards Against Humanity: a cruder, ruder, and funnier version of Apples to Apples

Castle Panic: a cooperative tower-defense game where players protect their castle from attacking monsters.

Forbidden Island: a game of treasure-hunting adventures on a slowly sinking island.

Pandemic: a cooperative game where players try to save the world from deadly diseases.

Carcassonne: a tile-laying game where players map out the French countryside.

    MindTrap: a lateral-thinking puzzle game.

    :

Trial By Trolley: a game of creating humorous moral dilemmas for other players to confront.

Poetry for Neanderthals: a password guessing game where players can only use one-syllable words to describe the answer to their teammates.

We’re All Doomed!: a semi-cooperative game of escaping a doomed planet – often at the expense of your fellow players.

    Dharma Study Session with Anand

August 2, 2025, 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, Zoom only

Living the Brahmaviharas in Everyday Life

Zoom: Please us this link to join by Zoom. (Alternatively, go to https://zoom.us/, click the links to enter a meeting, and enter meeting ID 971-373-141 and password 879550.)

    When:

Saturday, August 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. with a short break in the middle. The session will start promptly, so please be on-time. If you are unsure of your Zoom or internet connection, please try to connect a few minutes early.

    About the Session:

The Brahmaviharas (the “Four Immeasurables” or “Divine Abidings”)—loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), sympathetic joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā)—are central to Buddhist practice. The Brahmaviharas work together to cultivate a mind that is open, compassionate, joyful, and balanced.

They serve as essential tools for a practitioner aiming to walk the path to Nibbana while benefiting all beings.

Incorporating the Brahmaviharas into everyday life doesn’t require dramatic changes. It’s about noticing opportunities to respond with kindness, compassion, joy, and balance in all situations. By regularly practicing these qualities, you gradually transform your own mind and behavior, leading to greater peace and harmony in both your own life and the lives of those around you.

Let's understand the Brahmaviharas and explore together on how we can live the Brahmaviharas in our daily lives as we walk on the path.

    Study material

Most of the session will draw the texts from the book "The Sublime Attitudes" by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

Here is the Study session material from the last session. Additional material will be posted here few days before the session.

A Dharma Study Session with Gareth Young and Elizabeth

    Saturday, December 06, 2025, 9:00am to 4:00pm

In Person (Hospital Drive) and on Zoom

The Fire Sermon is third discourse given by the Buddha after his enlightenment (according to the Theravadan tradition), and it is one of his more powerful, likening our sensual engagement with the world to a fire that is raging, fed by our own intentions: "Everything is burning...the eye is burning...thoughts are burning". In this half-day study session Gareth Young will explore this important and profound early teaching and show how its teachings can be used as a pillar of our practice. The exploration will include lessons from the Buddha's first two sermons and other relevant suttas to fill out the context, history and teaching.

Here is a link to a document containing the text of the Fire Sermon as well as other suttas to which Gareth refers in this study session.

    Letting Go and Finding Joy
    Residential Retreat with Gareth Young

    Wednesday September 16 - Sunday September 20, 2025

    YMCA Camp Ocoee, Ocoee, TN

In the rush of daily life, we become caught up and lose sight of the peace, joy, compassion and wisdom that is right there every moments our lives. This five-day silent meditation retreat offers you the space to step away from the noise, reconnect with yourself, and cultivate the deep peace that only extended practice can bring. It's an opportunity to let go of the past, to let go of the future, and to rest, not abiding, on the brink of the present moment. It provides a framework for allowing joy to emerge and for living into it in our everyday lives.

While a single day of retreat can offer a taste of stillness, a multi-day retreat allows that stillness to settle in—to move beyond surface calm into a place of profound insight and renewal. With each passing day, as distractions fade, clarity emerges. You’ll notice how stress arises and dissipates, how habitual patterns loosen their grip, and how joy and ease naturally take their place.

Guided by Gareth, we will work with the mindfulness and meditation practices from the Pali canon, particularly Mindfulness of Breathing (Anapanasati Sutta) and The Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta), and with practices from the Chan Buddhist tradition, particularly Hongzhi, Huineng's Platform Sutra, and the Diamond Sutra, to cultivate stillness of mind and peaceful engagement in the fullness of our lives.

Nestled within the lush forests of Camp Ocoee, this retreat offers a tranquil escape where nature itself supports your practice. Mornings begin with the gentle hush of the trees, days unfold by the serene lake, and each session takes place in the warm, inviting lodge designed for deep reflection. With comfortable accommodation, nourishing vegetarian meals, and a community of fellow practitioners, you’ll find the perfect environment to settle into stillness. Whether you're experienced in meditation or new to multi-day retreats, this extended period of silence will help you cultivate a steadier mind and a more open heart—both on and off the cushion.

If you are longing for a true reset, the kind that lingers long after you return home, this retreat is for you.

Schedule and Arrival  Registration will be from 4:00 to 6:00 on Wed. March 19th, 2025. Please plan to arrive during this window. A full schedule will be available prior to the retreat's start date.

Accommodation Rooms are comfortable and spacious with adequate bathroom facilities. The rooms are generally shared, but at far less than their maximum capacity. We do our best to accommodate the needs and wishes of attendees, but are generally unable to provide private sleeping. Camping is an option.

Meals Vegetarian meals will be provided. Vegan, dairy and gluten-free options will be available for every meal; snacks will also be available. Please mention any dietary restrictions on the registration form.

About the Retreat Director Beth Herzig is a dedicated retreat leader and long-time meditation practitioner who has been organizing retreats since 2019. A passionate advocate for the power of stepping away from daily routines, Beth believes that retreats provide a unique opportunity for growth, healing, and connection. She has been an active board member and volunteer with Flowering Lotus Meditation since 2017 and completed extensive meditation training, including the 2022 Dharma Teacher Training with One Dharma. Beth’s warmth, experience, and commitment to making meditation accessible create a welcoming and transformative retreat experience for all who attend. Beth is currently the Executive Director at Flowering Lotus Meditation.

Cost We work hard to keep our fees to a minimum, but cannot avoid significant out-of-pocket costs for the space and food for a residential retreat. Retreat cost to be determined. (But note the section on "Financial Assistance" below.)

COVID: No specific protocols or requirements at this time, but we may follow up if circumstances change

Payment and Refund and Cancellation Policies

Payment Payment in full is preferred at time of registration. However, it is permissible to pay half at time of registration and the rest thirty days prior to the start of the retreat. Should RCS need to cancel a retreat for any reason (unlikely), all payments would be refunded in full.

Refund policy for cancellations: If you register and cancel 30 days or more prior to the retreat start date, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation up to 15 days prior to the start date will receive a 50% refund. No refunds are available after that date.

If you have registered for the retreat and need to cancel, please contact the retreat administrator asap.

Financial Assistance  One of Red Clay's goals is for every one to be able to attend regardless of ability to pay. To achieve this goal, a scholarship fund has been accumulated from donations from previous retreats and is available to help pay for those who need financial assistance. If you need financial assistance for this retreat, please contact the retreat administrator.

    Testimonials from past attendees

"The 5-day retreat offered me a chance to disconnect from daily distractions and find inner peace. I experienced reduced stress, improved concentration, and a deeper understanding of myself. The structured environment also encouraged self-discipline and emotional balance. Plus, being in a community of like-minded individuals was supportive and inspiring. This type of immersion is very difficult to experience in a daylong retreat."
    - Amit (attended retreat in 2024)

"You might not expect that sitting, walking, and eating in complete silence alongside others for nearly five days could foster such a strong sense of community, but I discovered a renewed connection with everyone around me once the noise of everyday life was left behind.

The clear mountain air and serene setting created the perfect environment to unplug from the constant demands of modern technology. I found it surprisingly easy to set aside my phone and refrain from using it for nearly a week.

I am happy for future opportunities to participate in more retreats and hope to gain further insights from peacefully coexisting within such an accommodating community."
    - Clay (attended retreat in 2024)

    HIKING

    Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 9:30AM to 1:00pm

Location - Chattahoochee River Rec Area

    About the Hike

We are pleased to announce the hiking event, taking place on Saturday, October 25! We invite everyone on a hike at Chattahoochee River Rec Area, sharp from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event provides both visitors and sangha members with an exciting opportunity to meaningfully observe the tranquility found in nature. Seeking peace of mind in the wilderness dates back to the original practice of the Buddha and his disciples, so we hope this easy morning stroll will help participants connect more deeply with themselves and their walking companions.

We will pause for a brief period of meditation, followed by a break for a packed lunch, so please be sure to bring the following items:

    1. A day pack for convenient storage
    2. 20 oz of water to maintain hydration
    3. A personal packed lunch, and perhaps a small amount of food to share with others
    4. Closed-toed shoes

The leader of this event, Clay Roper, has requested that all participants:

    • Begin hydrating the day before our hike to ensure the well-being of everyone involved
    • Please leave any pets at home for this hike, as downed trees from the recent hurricane may present additional hazards
    • Disclose any health concerns or limitations that may arise during the hike
    • Provide emergency contact information (to be completed on-site)

    Bring a sandwich and water!

In person event at Red Clay Sangha

Curious about Buddhism but not sure where to start? Join us for a class where we will engage in discussion around the basic concepts and a short, guided meditation.

"Don’t try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist; use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are."

Buddhist teachings are pragmatic and applicable to everyone, so we welcome people of all backgrounds!

This class will be led by Havana Nguyen and Holly Theisen-Jones.

At Red Clay, Holly serves on the Sangha care committee and helps facilitate Peach Blossom Sangha, a group that practices in the Plum Village Tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. Being Present and Finding Peace
    Residential Retreat with Gareth Young

    Wednesday March 18 - Sunday March 22, 2025

Instruction on work duties and other retreat matters will be provided after dinner, and it is enormously helpful if all are present for this segment of the day. The retreat begins with dinner at 6:00 pm on the Wednesday evening and finishes up at lunchtime on Sunday the 23rd.

The estimated per-person cost to cover these of $290 is the fee to attend.
